What can I put on an Ingoa name board?

Your family name. A word that matters. Your business name. An Ingoa name board puts it on a hand-designed board, made by hand in Penrith NSW and Point Cook VIC.

Ingoa means name in te reo Māori. Here's what you can put on one, how the letter limits work, and how to get it right before you order.

What is a Hori.Inc Ingoa name board?

It's a hand-designed board with your word on it, made to order. It's $185 AUD, with Afterpay available at checkout (four payments of $46.25).

You choose:

  • Your word or name
  • Your lettering size: large 9cm (up to 7 characters) or small 6cm (up to 10 characters)
  • Your style: Moana blue, Kōkōwai red or Pasifika timber

What words can I put on it?

Three kinds of words come up most.

A family name

The name by the front door. It might be your surname, your family's name, or the name of the whole whānau.

A word that matters

A word your family lives by. Think AROHA, ALOFA, AIGA or FAMILI.

Your business name

A board for the counter, the shop wall or the front of the salon. Check your business name against the letter limits below. If it's longer, a custom piece may suit you better.

Can I use te reo Māori, Samoan or Tongan?

Yes. Words in te reo Māori, Samoan, Tongan and other Pacific languages are welcome.

Spelling matters, especially in a language with macrons. Check it with someone who knows before you order, and type it exactly as you want it to appear.

How many letters fit on an Ingoa board?

  • Large, 9cm lettering: up to 7 characters. Bolder from across the room.
  • Small, 6cm lettering: up to 10 characters. Fits a longer name.

Spaces and punctuation count towards the limit, and the preview on the product page counts as you type.

Worked examples

  • AROHA is 5. Fits large or small.
  • WHĀNAU is 6. Fits large or small.
  • OFA ATU is 7 with the space. Fits large, right on the limit, or small.
  • THOMPSON is 8. Too long for large, fits small.
  • WILLIAMSON is 10. Small only, right on the limit.
  • THE WILLIAMSONS is 15 with the space. Too long for either. Drop "THE" and it fits small.

How to count your letters

Write your word out in capitals and count every character, spaces included. Then count again, and get someone else to count it too. It's an easy one to get wrong when you're excited.

Which style should I choose?

There are three styles: Moana blue, Kōkōwai red and Pasifika timber.

Hori.Inc works in two design languages. The Māori style is flowing kōwhaiwhai set in deep resin colour against natural timber. The Pasifika style is fine hand-painted pattern on the natural grain.

Think about where the board is going. What colours are already in that room or on that door? Do you want the board to stand out, or sit warm against the timber?

Will my board look exactly like the preview?

Close, but not identical. The preview is a guide. Final lettering is hand-finished by the artist, so the brushwork and the way the pattern sits around your word will be your board's own.

That's the point. Nobody else has your board.

How do I order an Ingoa board?

  1. Type your word into the preview on the Ingoa name board page and check the count.
  2. Choose large or small lettering.
  3. Choose Moana blue, Kōkōwai red or Pasifika timber.
  4. Check your spelling one more time, macrons included.
  5. Check out. Afterpay is available.

Your word, lettering size and style are saved with your order, so there's no back-and-forth in the DMs. Boards are made to order: allow roughly 6 weeks from ordering to being ready.

Once it's ready, we post with standard tracked shipping across Australia (AUD $25 for orders under $250, or $42 for $250 and over), or you can pick up by arrangement from Penrith NSW or Point Cook VIC. Sending it to New Zealand? Get in touch for a delivery quote.
